Enter Dimensional Energy. Based out of New York, the company utilizes carbon dioxide emissions and water to produce sustainably-produced aviation fuel (SAF) and they are becoming more prominent - with the company announcing that on the 12th of December (Dec.12) on how they had closed the $20 million deal in a Series A funding round that was comprised of Microsoft's carbon fund.

Speaking about their reason for offering funding, the director at Microsoft's climate innovation fund Brandon Middaugh said in a statement:

"The world requires urgent and swift decarbonization throughout all sectors, as well Dimensional Energy shows great promise as a cleaner and lower carbon aviation option, as well as a reduction in industrial emissions,"

"Microsoft has been the first to adopt sustainable aviation fuels and views this market as crucial to the global reduction of carbon emissions, which is why Microsoft's global climate innovation fund supports Dimensional Energy's work as an equity direct investor."

Among the other investors, headed by Envisioning Partners, were: United Airlines' sustainable flight fund, RockCreek's intelligent aviation futures fund, DSC Investment, Delek US, New York Ventures, and existing investors like Elemental Excelerator and Chloe Capital in helping to raise the total to $28 million.

Speaking to TechCrunch, Dimensional Energy founder and CEO Jason Salfi said:

"The process of extracting hydrocarbons and producing them have led to not just climate change, but also displacement of indigenous people globally as well as a host of environmental disasters."

"Dimensional Energy is a substitute for fossil fuels derived from carbon dioxide as well as water. Dimensional is committed to sourcing feedstocks that are in balance with nature and the communities in which plants are constructed."

Dimensional Energy on the rise

After this latest investment the company announced plans to build an advanced power-to-liquids fuel plant which will have the fuel source supplied by Lafarge's Richmond Cement Plant in British Columbia, Canada in collaboration with carbon capture company Svante.

It also has plans for Dimensional Energy's first direct to consumer (BTC) or BTB (BTB) products, a fossil-free surf wax and a cruelty-free fat alternative customized specifically for vegan food manufacturers.

Dimensional Energy's main customers are freight companies, airlines and chemical firms. During this year, they secured a deal with aircraft maker Boom Supersonic to sell 5 million gallon of SAF per year for Boom's flight testing program.

But, balancing between sustainability and creating profits can be a challenge, however, Dimensional earns its revenue through contracted offtake agreements and is in search of long-term contracts with airlines and specialist chemical companies.
